Last year when my soon-to-be five-year-old daughter, Jade, asked for a Little Mermaid birthday party, I was almost as excited as she was!! I mean, have you seen all of the mermaid party ideas floating around on Pinterest?! And, mermaids have been so trendy the last few years! Still are. Heck, I want a mermaid tail to wear at the pool!! I had SO much fun planning this party!
I talked about how I plan parties a few weeks ago (you can read about it here). As you can see, for this party I primarily used aqua and purple colors mixed in with some items related to the Little Mermaid theme. Jade loved how it turned out!
I bought the fishing nets thinking I would mainly use them to complement this theme, but I have actually used them for every birthday party since this one! I LOVE the effect of the balloons hanging from the ceiling in the net. It looks even better in person and really adds a WOW! factor! My kids pretty much think I’m the coolest mom ever, just from the balloons! Then I also draped nets over the colored table cloths on the table and island to give the room even more of a nautical feel. The colored table cloths alone make a big impact.
I used some aqua-colored decor that I had on hand, as well as some shells and strands of pearls. When it comes to decorating, I always try to find things I already have around my house that will go with the theme. I also like to put a special birthday message on my chalkboard sign. I love that I can personalize it, and my kids feel extra special.
I also keep streamers in various colors on hand because they are such a simple and inexpensive way to add some fun to party decorations. The cute purple tassel banner I found at Target, and the fun lanterns are from Zurchers.
This was one of my favorite parts of the decor! I purchased a couple sand pails from Target in the Dollar Spot section, washed them up, and used brown sugar for the sand. Then I bought this Wilton seashell mold and Wilton candy melts to make all of the cute seashells. They’re super quick and easy! You just melt the candy in the microwave according to the package directions and then fill the molds. Then I put them in the fridge to set. They don’t take long to set up at all. So once again, quick, easy, and so cute!! All the kids loved them too! Then I used my ceramic letter dishes that spell out “HAPPY” and filled them with aqua-colored jelly belly jelly beans.
I usually make my kids’ birthday cakes, but I have also purchased from bakeries at times. For the mermaid cake I seriously considered purchasing a custom cake from a small local cake baker/decorator because I saw so many adorable mermaid cakes on Pinterest that I wanted. But Jade really wanted me to be the one to decorate the cake. I’ve actually made a few fancier cakes, but I didn’t want to take the time to do it for this. So I used the trick I’ve used before. I purchased a plain white cake from Costco with no decoration on it, and I decorated it myself using The Little Mermaid character set, blue and gold sprinkles to look like water and sand, some cute little Celebration Sixlets, and the seashells I had molded. Jade was very impressed and couldn’t have been happier! AND it didn’t take me very long! Mission accomplished!!
Then for the drink I used my favorite glass punch bowl that I literally use for EVERYTHING, and just put an aqua blue drink in it to make it look like ocean water. Easy peasy! So overall, this took some time and planning in advance, but I don’t feel like I went too crazy. There are so many other things you could do too!
