Learn what parts of a DIY project you should hire out. From plumbing and electrical work to A/C repair and countertop fabrication, here’s how to DIY safely and choose the right pros.

DIY With Confidence: When It’s Time to Call a Pro

Doing things yourself can save money, teach you new skills, and make your home feel even more “you.” But not every part of a project should be DIY’ed. Some jobs require special tools, training, or licenses — and sometimes hiring a pro keeps you safer and saves you money in the long run.

Here’s a simple guide to help you know what to tackle and what to hire out.

Plumbing: When You Should Call a Plumber

You can handle little things like replacing a showerhead or swapping out a faucet. But when it comes to the bigger stuff? Bring in a pro.

Hire a plumber when your project includes:

  • Moving water lines
  • Touching the main drain
  • Fixing leaks inside the wall
  • Installing a new drain
  • Any work that requires cutting pipes

Plumbing mistakes can cause major leaks, mold, or damage you don’t discover until later. A plumber makes sure everything flows the right way (literally!).

Electrical Work: Definitely Hire This Out

This is one of the top things you should not DIY unless you’re trained and licensed. Electricity is dangerous, and incorrect wiring can cause shocks or even house fires.

Hire a licensed electrician when your DIY involves:

  • Rewiring a room
  • Installing lights and outlets in new locations
  • Upgrading your breaker panel
  • Running electrical to an island or outdoor space

Some things that we’ve learned to do on our own over the years include installing/replacing light fixtures and replacing outlets. These are skills that can be learned, but be sure to do it safely. Let the pros handle the wires. You can still do the fun parts — like choosing the fixtures!

HVAC Work: Leave It to the Experts

A/C systems are complicated and require special tools to repair properly. And refrigerant? You legally need a license to handle it.

Hire an HVAC technician for things like:

  • Installing a new A/C unit
  • Fixing cooling or heating issues
  • Moving ductwork
  • Running new vents

You can still do small things yourself, like replacing filters or cleaning vents, but big A/C work should always be hired out. We actually just installed a couple of mini-split systems ourselves, however we still had our electrician come out and double check everything.

Countertop Fabrication: Bring in a Fabricator

DIY’ing counters can be tempting, but materials like quartz, granite, marble, or butcher block need very careful cutting and fitting. Countertop fabricators have the heavy-duty tools, precision saws, and templates to ensure everything fits perfectly.

Hire a countertop fabricator when:

  • You’re installing stone or quartz
  • You need a custom cut for a sink
  • You want mitered edges
  • You’re doing a kitchen or bathroom makeover

One wrong cut can ruin an entire slab — and they aren’t cheap. A pro makes sure your counters look seamless and last for years.

Other Tasks You May Want to Hire Out

Depending on your comfort level, you might choose to hire out:

  • Drywall finishing
  • Flooring installation
  • Major tile work
  • Large structural changes
  • Window installation

Think of it this way: If it affects the safety or structure of your home, or you need a license to do it, hiring a pro might be the best move.

What You Can DIY (And Feel Proud About!)

There are still tons of things you can tackle yourself:

  • Painting
  • Building furniture
  • Installing hardware
  • Upcycling old pieces
  • Simple décor projects
  • Accent walls
  • Wallpaper

These let you be creative without needing special certifications.

DIY is fun, rewarding, and a great way to make your home feel like your home. But part of being a smart DIY’er is knowing when to call in the experts. Hiring out the right parts of a project keeps your home safe, saves you stress, and makes the finished result even better.

Do what you can, hire what you should, and enjoy watching your project come together!
