DIY Boho Wall Tutorial
Are you looking for a way to give your home the cool, vibrant, and boho-vibe of your dreams? DIYing your own wall is one of the best ways to add color, texture, and unique personality—and it definitely does not have to be expensive or complicated! This DIY project may seem a bit tricky at first but trust me when I say it isn’t that hard once you get started.
Supplies
- 3 colors of desired paint (I just used the paint sample size from Lowe’s)
- Small Paint Roller
- Wooster Shortcut Paint Brush
- Frog Tape
- Small Paint Trays
- Drop Cloth
- Level
- Large grout sponge
- Tape measure
How to DIY A Painted Ombre Arch
- Determine if you want your ombre look to go LIGHT to DARK or DARK to LIGHT. This is an important first step.
- Select your 3 paint colors for your desired area.
- Or you can select 2 paint colors and then combine those 2 colors in equal parts to create your center color for your ombre look.
- To create your arch, mark your wall for the center.
- Mark the width and height of your desired arch.
- Attach string (LENGTH HALF OF ARCH WIDTH) to pencil and thumb tack.
- Place the pencil at the highest point and insert tack.
- Trace a semicircle at the top.
- Tape off the sides for your arch.
- Using a level, divide your arch into 3 sections, equal in height.
- Use painter’s tape to mark over your dividing lines to begin.
- For each section, take your 3 solid colors and paint your 3 separate sections, starting with the top of the arch.
- For your 3rd color, paint from the bottom up, leaving that gap between colors from your painters tape.
- Cut up a large grout sponge into several pieces along with 3 foam sponge brushes.
- Use sponges and dab the colors from light to dark.
- Blend as little or as much as you want. Start with less paint on your sponges. This is not about perfection but more about art!
- Lastly, sit back and wait for your colors to dry!
How do you store a paintbrush?
Not finished with a project, but you need to take a break? Don’t worry. Give this a try.
- Place your wet paintbrush in a zipper plastic bag.
- Place it in the refrigerator.
- When ready to work again, your brush is prepped and ready.
- Add a little more paint and get back to work.
Is There a Wrong Way to Ombre?
Absolutely not! I asked around for lots of input on whether I should have my Painted Ombre Arch with the LIGHT to DARK or DARK to LIGHT look. The majority voted for the LIGHT to DARK, so I went with that. But really, I think it would be stunning anyway it is created. I love projects like this that allow for your own personal interpretation. Don’t you?
How To Erase Pencil Marks Off Wall
Well, I messed up on my arch the first time. I didn’t like the height, so I had to use a Magic Eraser to get off the marks. This tip is one that will easily remove the pencil marks without smudging and leaving a dirty mess, like actually erasing it would. However, it does remove the paint sheen, so be prepared to touch up your base coat if you make a mistake, as I did. And don’t worry, mistakes are normal. They are proof you are trying!
What do you think? Check out my boho wall tutorial on the entire process. I have one question for you though… Do you like the distinct colors more noticeable like in my personal Painted Ombre Arch Wall or would you prefer a more subtle change with the ombre effect? I would love to hear what you think and also love to see what you create! Have fun while you work.
