When we decided to revamp our family/TV room, we were faced with a few structural challenges. The room’s layout, dictated by windows, doors, and a pellet stove, made traditional setups difficult. To maximize our space and add more seating, we embarked on building a raised bar seating area behind the couch. Here’s how we turned our media room into a game day paradise.
Building a Raised Bar Seating Area
Transform your space with a raised bar seating area that not only elevates the aesthetics of your room but also enhances its functionality. Ideal for narrow or awkwardly shaped rooms, this project utilizes vertical space to create additional seating without compromising floor area. Whether you’re gearing up for game day or planning a cozy movie night, a well-designed bar seating setup can turn any living space into a dynamic, multi-functional area perfect for hosting friends and family. Read on to discover how you can build your own raised bar seating area, complete with practical tips and design inspiration.
The Design Phase
The journey began with Chad sketching the bar’s design on paper, considering the room’s narrow front and back walls. With the TV mounted on the front narrow wall, we had to align our couch similarly, which limited our seating. By utilizing the length of the room, we could implement our bar seating idea without compromising on space.
Building the Foundation
Chad constructed an elevated platform at the room’s back using 2x4s and plywood, laying a sturdy foundation for our bar. He then crafted the bar frame, ensuring everything was perfectly level and secure. To support the eventual countertop, he incorporated three robust support pillars into the structure.
Choosing the Materials for Bar Seating Area
For the bar’s surface, we chose melamine boards and drywall for a smooth finish. The decision to use Brickwebb for the bar’s face and pillars was inspired by our love for iconic baseball stadiums like Fenway Park and Wrigley Field. The Boston Mill brick color brought a touch of nostalgia and character to the room.
We topped the bar with a quartzite countertop, known for its durability and chic appearance. This choice wasn’t just aesthetic—it was practical, providing a resilient surface for meals and drinks during game nights.
Game Day Ready
The final setup included not just the large TV on the front wall but also two smaller TVs on the sides of the room. This arrangement allowed us to watch multiple games simultaneously, making our media room the ultimate hangout spot for sports enthusiasts.
Our new bar seating area has transformed how we enjoy our media room, providing ample space for family and friends to gather and cheer on their favorite teams. It’s more than just a room; it’s a centerpiece for making memories during every big game!
Building this bar seating area has significantly enhanced our media room’s functionality and aesthetic. It’s a testament to how thoughtful design and careful planning can overcome spatial challenges and fulfill more than just one need. Whether it’s a casual family movie night or an exciting sports event, our media room is now equipped to host it all with style and comfort.
