Supplies Needed to Paint Your Countertops
- Tub and Tile Refinishing Kit (mine is the color “White)
- Painter’s Tape
- Plastic to protect your walls and cabinets (comes in the kit)
- Roller or Paintbrush (comes in the kit)
How to Paint Your Countertops
- Start by prepping your surface. I had to replace some grout and caulk the edges of my tiles, but you do whatever you need to do to create a blank canvas to paint. Be sure you clean your countertop and anywhere else you will be painting as well.
- Do a light sand to help remove some sheen and provide a surface more accepting of paint. You don’t have to go crazy. Just a quick light sand. Then wipe down the surface to remove any dust.
- Tape off any areas you don’t want the paint to touch. I used tape and plastic to protect the wall behind the tile and my cabinets.
- Mix your paint according to the package instructions. The paint comes with an acrylic resin hardener that needs to be added to the paint can and then stirred.
- Roll your paint onto the countertop. I used a small roller and paintbrush to paint the mixture onto the countertop. Be sure you read and follow the instructions for your kit. I did four coats of paint to get good coverage. You need to wait at least two hours in between coats. As you can see, I also painted my tile backsplash and even my sink with the same paint!
- Let your countertop cure before use according to the kit’s instructions. This tub and tile paint will reach a full cure time in 7 days, at which time it will have reached maximum hardness.
Tips For Painting Your Countertops
- Be sure to clean and sand your bathroom countertops thoroughly before painting to ensure proper adhesion.
- Apply several thin coats of paint, allowing each layer to dry completely for a smooth and durable finish.
- Get creative with patterns, stencils, or even a faux marble effect if you’re feeling fancy. It’s your chance to add a personal touch to your bathroom space.
What Type of Paint Works Best for Bathroom Countertops?
Selecting the right paint is essential for ensuring the longevity of bathroom countertops. Opt for a high-quality, moisture-resistant enamel paint specially formulated for bathroom surfaces. These paints offer excellent adhesion and durability, standing up to the challenges of moisture and frequent use in the bathroom environment.
The tub and tile paint I used is a great option for many reasons. It has a low odor and is low in VOCs. The dry time and cure time is pretty fast compared to other paints. It’s suitable for a variety of surfaces including bathtubs, sinks, countertops, tile, ceramic, porcelain, acrylic, fiberglass, hardwood and enamel. This worked well for me since I painted my laminate countertop, travertine tile backsplash, and porcelain sink all at the same time with the same paint. The paint is formulated with acrylic resin for durability and resistance to flaking. I also appreciate that this tub and tile paint kit comes with everything you need!
Should You Seal Your Painted Counters?
The tub and tile paint kit I used says it does not need to be sealed. I chose not to seal it so that I can see how it holds up without. But you totally could put a clear topcoat on it. If you choose to use another paint type, sealing your painted bathroom countertops may be a crucial step for maintaining a fresh and durable appearance. Once the paint has fully cured, apply multiple coats of a clear, high-quality polycrylic sealer. This protective layer adds resilience, enhances water resistance, and ensures your bathroom countertops retain their newly painted allure.
Your countertops are about to go from drab to fab, and you’re the magician behind it all. Grab that paintbrush, let the creative vibes flow, and watch your bathroom transform into a stylish haven.
