Update Your Front Door with New, Custom Door Mat!
Supplies for Creating a Custom Door Mat
- Plain coir doormat or fabric door mat
- Cricut cutting machine
- Vinyl
- Cricut Design Space (free app)
- Paint (I used acrylic craft paint)
- Paintbrush or foam brush
- Weeding tools for your vinyl
- Scissors or craft knife
- Cricut EasyPress Mini
Instructions for Creating a Custom Door Mat
- Pull up your Cricut Design Space and create your mat design. I went with a baseball design because it kind of consumes our life (in a good way!), and it’s baseball season! Adjust the size and layout of your design to fit your door mat. If you prefer, you can also purchase pre-made vinyl stencils in various designs and sizes.
- Use your Cricut cutting machine to cut the design onto adhesive vinyl. Weed your image so that you are leaving the background of the image. This will be your stencil for your mat.
- Lay your plain door mat flat. Carefully peel the vinyl stencil away from its backing and position it onto the door mat in the desired location. Press down firmly on the stencil to ensure it adheres as well as possible to the mat.
- The adhesion will likely not be sufficient and it will need reinforced. Using your Cricut EasyPress Mini (or a regular iron), place a tea towel over each stencil and press down with the heated iron. This will melt the vinyl just enough to securely attach each stencil to the doormat.
- Using a paintbrush or foam brush, apply an even layer of paint over the stencil. If you’re using a coir doormat, be sure to use a decent amount of paint and really dab it down into the fibers. Make sure to cover the entire design with paint, but avoid applying too much paint, as this can cause bleeding under the stencil.
- While the paint is still wet, carefully peel away the vinyl stencil to reveal the painted design underneath. Take care not to smudge the paint as you remove the stencil.
- Let the paint dry completely before moving or using the door mat. This may take a few hours, depending on the type of paint you used and the weather conditions.
- If necessary, use a small paintbrush to touch up any areas where the paint may have bled or the lines are not crisp.
- Once the paint is dry and any touch-ups have been made, place your custom door mat at your front door or entryway to greet guests with a personalized touch.
Tips and Tricks for Creating a DIY Custom Door Mat
- Use outdoor or fabric paint for durability and weather resistance, especially if your door mat will be exposed to the elements.
- Make sure the door mat is clean and dry before applying the vinyl stencil to ensure good adhesion.
- Press down firmly on the edges of the stencil to prevent paint from bleeding underneath.
- Experiment with different paint colors and techniques to achieve your desired look.
- Allow the paint to dry completely before removing the stencil to avoid smudging or smearing the design.
- For added durability, consider applying a clear sealant or waterproofing spray over the painted design once it has dried completely.
If, after reading this you’ve decided you’d rather just buy a cute door mat, I’ve rounded up a bunch of stylish options!
Update Your Front Door with A Quick Coat of Paint!
Supplies for Painting Your Front Door
- Exterior paint in your desired color (I used Hudson Bay by Benjamin Moore)
- Primer (if needed)
- Paintbrushes or foam rollers
- Painter’s tape
- Drop cloths or plastic sheeting
- Sandpaper or sanding block
- Tack cloth or damp cloth
- Screwdriver (for removing hardware)
- Paint tray
- Paint stir stick
Instructions for Painting Your Front Door
- Start by removing any hardware, such as handles and locks, from the door using a screwdriver. Place drop cloths or plastic sheeting beneath the door to protect the surrounding area from drips and spills.
- Use painter’s tape to mask off any areas you don’t want to paint, such as door hardware, windows, and trim. Cover any remaining exposed surfaces with additional drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect them from accidental paint splatters.
- Thoroughly clean the door surface with soap and water to remove dirt, grime, and grease. Once dry, use sandpaper or a sanding block to lightly sand the door to create a smooth surface for paint adhesion. Wipe away any dust with a tack cloth or damp cloth.
- If your door has not been previously painted or is a different color than your desired paint, apply a coat of primer to the door surface. Allow the primer to dry completely before proceeding.
- Stir the paint thoroughly before pouring it into a paint tray. Use a paintbrush or foam roller to apply an even coat of paint to the door surface, working in long, smooth strokes in the direction of the wood grain. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying additional coats as needed for full coverage.
- Once the paint is dry to the touch, carefully reattach any door hardware using a screwdriver. Take care not to scratch or smudge the freshly painted surface.
- After the final coat of paint has dried, carefully remove the painter’s tape from the door surface. Dispose of drop cloths or plastic sheeting and clean up any paint spills or drips with soap and water.
Tips and Tricks for Painting Your Front Door
- Choose a high-quality exterior paint specifically formulated for use on doors and trim for long-lasting durability and weather resistance.
- Paint your front door during mild weather conditions with low humidity to ensure optimal drying and curing times.
- If your door has panels, paint the recessed areas first with a brush, then use a foam roller to paint the flat surfaces for a smooth finish.
- For best results, apply multiple thin coats of paint rather than one thick coat to avoid drips, runs, and brush marks.
- Allow each coat of paint to dry completely before applying the next coat to prevent smudging or lifting of the paint.
