So, you’ve got a laundry room that’s screaming for a makeover, and you’re thinking, “Why not wallpaper this space into laundry-day paradise?” Well, you’re in the right place because I’m about to spill the beans on how to wallpaper your laundry room like a pro, to transform that dull laundry room into a stylish and fun spot where you might actually look forward to folding clothes.
Let’s be honest, laundry rooms tend to be the unsung heroes of our homes. They work hard, but they rarely get the love they deserve in terms of decor. Well, that’s about to change because I’m here to guide you through the process of wallpapering your laundry room. We’re talking easy steps, cool design ideas, and tips to make this chore-central of your home feel like a space you want to spend time in. Supplies Needed for Wallpaper For Laundry Room

- Utility knife or Exacto knife with extra blades
- Paintbrush (my all-time fave)
- Foam roller
- Laser level (I used this on almost every project)
- Level
How to Wallpaper Your Laundry Room
- Sometimes wallpaper panels come on a large roll and you have to cut each panel from the roll. If necessary, start by cutting the panels.
- Starting from a corner on the left, mark where the right edge of your first wallpaper panel will go. Be sure to leave an inch or so of excess paper on the left edge to account for crooked corners/walls. Use a laser level and/or level to draw a plumb line where the right edge will meet up.
- Once sections are cut, mix the paste. There are many different types of pasted wallpapers. This one came with a powder that you mix with water, then roll it or paint it onto the wall.
- I mixed mine in a sand bucket, which was hilarious (it was what I could find), but there are other types of buckets made specifically for this as well.
- Roll or brush the paste directly onto the wall in the area of your first panel. Be sure your paste covers the entire panel, so the panel will stick well. I add extra to the edges to make sure they are stuck securely.
- Add the first panel of wallpaper to the wall. Remember, you will want to overlap a bit at the corner and the ceiling because there is a good chance the wall and ceiling will not be plumb/level.
- This will be helpful when you’re trying to ensure the entire wall is covered.
- Run your smoothing tool over your first section starting from the top middle, working your way downward and outward. Smooth the panel well before you move onto the next. This removes all the air bubbles and the extra paste behind the wallpaper.
- If you are using a wallpaper pattern that is designed to meet up edge to edge, as I did, be sure you are careful to line them up perfectly. Others are made to overlap. Just be sure to follow the directions for your wallpaper. It’s essential you do this step right or your wallpaper might look strange, there may be a gap, or your pattern may not match up.
- To get a nice clean cut edge on your wallpaper, you will want to use a straight edge and knife to cut any excess wallpaper. Be sure to have many extra blades because they dull quickly when cutting wallpaper.
- Continue this process with the second panel and so on until the space you have chosen to wallpaper is complete. It is that simple!
Tips For Wallpapering Your Laundry Room
- If you can recruit a friend to help, do it! I have always hung my wallpaper on my own, but I can imagine how helpful an extra set of hands would be!
- One advantage of pasted paper over peel and stick is that you can move it around on the wall a bit as you are trying to get it in the right spot.
- If you are installing wallpaper on a wall with lights, I highly recommend removing the lights; it is so much easier to wallpaper with them removed.
- While I don’t think wallpaper is difficult to install, I do feel like it’s easy to get frustrated when installing it. Just remember to relax, don’t rush it, and take a breather when you need to!
What about corners when you are wallpapering?
My corners didn’t line up. It’s nearly impossible because your corners will never be plumb. I don’t mind because it isn’t that noticeable, especially when you look at the bigger picture of the whole room.
How do I remove the wallpaper down the line?
This is not the wallpaper of the old days! If you want to take down your wallpaper, all you need to do is run over the wallpaper with a damp sponge or cloth and it reactivates the paste. Then, you can peel it off and wash your walls. Easy peasy!
