Supplies for a Modern Bench Dupe

Instructions for a Modern Bench Dupe

  • Start by deciding what dimensions you’d like your bench to be. The best part of DIY is that you can make your projects just the right size to fit in your home.
  • Begin by cutting the 2×12 boards to the desired dimensions for the bench seat and legs. You’ll need two long boards for the seat, two shorter boards for the legs, and a long narrow board as a support down the middle of the bench, but you can customize the dimensions to fit your space.
  • Add 4 pocket holes to the legs. This makes the assembly so easy! I use a nifty pocket hole jig that is inexpensive but that I use all the time.
  • Add a line of wood glue to the edge of the leg piece, then line it up with your seat board. I used clamps to help me keep things lined up. Screw the leg boards onto the seat board using the pocket holes.
  • Add your support beam down the middle of the seat board with wood glue, then screws.
  • OPTIONAL: Once the bench frame is assembled, sand down any rough edges or surfaces to create a smooth finish. Then, apply wood stain or paint in the color of your choice to enhance the appearance of the bench and protect it from wear and tear. Allow the finish to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
  • OPTIONAL: Seal the Wood. For added durability, consider applying a coat of wood sealant to protect the bench from moisture and other environmental factors. This step is especially important if you plan to use the bench outdoors or in high-traffic areas.

Tips and Tricks

  • Select high-quality wood for your bench project to ensure durability and longevity. Hardwoods like oak, maple, or cedar are ideal for indoor benches, while pressure-treated lumber or cedar is suitable for outdoor use. I actually used pine for this bench to keep it VERY affordable.
  • Before starting construction, create a detailed plan or sketch of your bench design, including dimensions and assembly instructions. This will help you visualize the final product and avoid any costly mistakes during the building process.
  • To prevent splitting or cracking, pre-drill pilot holes for screws before attaching the wooden boards together. This will also make it easier to drive the screws into place and ensure a secure connection.
  • If building an outdoor bench, be sure to apply a weatherproof sealant to protect the wood from moisture, UV rays, and other outdoor elements. Reapply sealant annually to maintain the bench’s appearance and durability.
  • Always wear appropriate safety gear, such as goggles and gloves, when working with power tools or handling wood. Take your time and follow safety guidelines to prevent accidents and injuries during the construction process.
  • Look online at high-end furniture brands for bench styles you love. I chose a pretty simple style for this modern wood bench dupe, but there are so many pretty benches you could create!

How do I maintain and care for my wooden bench to ensure its longevity?

To maintain and care for your wooden bench and ensure its longevity, it’s essential to establish a regular cleaning and maintenance routine. Keep the bench clean by regularly wiping it down with a damp cloth to remove dust, dirt, and debris. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive materials that could damage the wood finish. Apply a protective sealant or wood preservative annually to protect the bench from moisture, UV rays, and other environmental factors. Additionally, consider placing the bench in a sheltered area or using a bench cover during inclement weather to prevent water damage and prolong its lifespan. Finally, inspect the bench periodically for signs of wear or damage, such as loose screws or cracks, and make any necessary repairs promptly to prevent further deterioration.

How do I remove stains or scratches from the wood surface of my bench?

To remove stains or scratches from the wood surface of your bench, start by assessing the severity of the damage. For minor scratches, try using a fine-grit sandpaper to gently buff out the imperfections, following the wood grain to avoid further damage. For deeper scratches or stains, consider using a wood stain marker or filler to match the color of the wood and fill in the damaged area. Once applied, allow the filler to dry completely before lightly sanding the surface to smooth it out. For stubborn stains, you may need to use a wood cleaner or mild detergent solution and a soft cloth to gently scrub the affected area. Always test any cleaning or repair products on a small, inconspicuous area of the bench first to ensure compatibility with the wood finish.
