How to Add Faux Wood Plank Ceiling In Your Home
The star of this project is the awesome ceiling system by Armstrong Ceilings. It comes with rails, clips, and planks. We chose the Country Classic Planks in White. I love these planks because they are easy to work with. They are made of mineral fiber, so you can cut them with a utility knife.
- First, you’ll put up your rails. We installed our rails the entire length of the ceiling, perpendicular to the joists, every 12ish inches. It doesn’t have to be exact. The rails cut fairly easily with metal snips.
- When you have your rails up, you can begin adding your planks. They have a convenient tongue and groove pattern and clip to the rails. I staggered my planks to achieve a more random look.
- Continue adding your planks across the ceiling, cutting your planks where needed to avoid lights, smoke detectors, etc.
- When all your planks are added, add your trim. I added trim all around the room, and used caulk to seal the edges. That’s it! These Armstrong Ceilings planks made this project so easy.
Tips For Adding a DIY Wood Plank Ceiling
- Grab a friend to help you. I think this is a project that needs two people, especially the rails. You want them to be straight and precise and it’s difficult to hold the rails up and drill at the same time without help.
- Be careful with your planks. They are made out of mineral fiber, which makes them really light and easy to work with, but it also means they break easily. You’ll want to be careful with them.
- Buy a few extra planks. You never know if you’ll measure something wrong, or cut a piece wrong, and it’s a pain to have to wait for more planks to come in to finish your ceiling.
What is the easiest way to cover a ceiling?
I definitely think this Armstrong Ceiling planks and rail system should be on the list! The tongue and groove system is so easy to put up, and the lightweight material was much easier to work with than wood. You could absolutely use wood planks for a similar look as well.
How do you cover an unsightly ceiling?
There are a lot of ways to cover a ceiling that you don’t love looking at. A simple way is to paint it! You might need to do a bit of prep work, but painting can be a good option. Another idea is a DIY Wood Plank Ceiling. There are a bunch of ways to do that, including this Armstrong Ceilings system. Wallpaper is also a fun addition to any ceiling.
