How to Transform a Vintage Vanity

As you may know, we’re getting ready to move to the ranch house. I have been looking for inspiration for the rooms in the ranch house and planning my DIY projects. My girls’ bedroom makeover in our current home was so much fun that I started planning their new room design first! (You might be seeing arches again… ;)) On Facebook marketplace, I found the cutest old vanity, so I decided to grab it for a great deal and transform it into the perfect vanity for their room. Follow along as I show you how to transform a vintage vanity and give it a whole new look. This is a simple project that you can easily do as well! Come check out this vanity flip!

When it came to this Vanity flip, I wanted to use a lot of what I already had on hand to make it a really budget-friendly project, and I am so glad I did. I used leftover trim from my bathroom renovation project and tile that I already had on hand, as well as grout from my bathroom project.  I purchased a couple of things for the mirror, and viola, a  gorgeous vanity for my girl’s bedroom. You, too, can use your scraps to do a project like this so you can reduce, reuse, and restore. Let’s get started!

How to Transform a Vanity into a New Piece You Love

• The first step in this vanity flip was to nail trim pieces to the top of the vanity. I used the old leftover trim I had in the garage. I cut it at a 45-degree angle and nailed it on with my nail gun. 

• I wanted to do something a bit unique and tile the top of the vanity. I have always loved the harlequin tile pattern. Yes, it is trendy right now and will eventually become less trendy. But it is also a timeless look that has been around for hundreds of years and will never truly go out of style, even when it’s not trending. Plus I love it, so I decided to go for it! This is your reminder always to do what you love, no matter what the trends are. 
• When tiling the harlequin tile pattern, it was easiest to place the tile first and then glue them one by one. This allowed me to adjust them as needed. Loctite Glue was perfect for this project because it would create a very strong bond between the wood and the marble, and it is repositionable for several minutes. When using this, you will need to wait 24 hours to grout once the tiles are placed with the glue. 

• While I waited for the glue to cure, I got to work on the mirror. When I first saw this mirror, I immediately thought of the popular Anthropologie mirror and knew I wanted to dupe it. I first spray-painted my flexible trim gold (you can choose whichever color you would like). Once this was dry, I added it to the frame of my mirror. This trim is really easy to work with, comes with a self-adhesive backing, and cuts great with the miter shears. It is perfect for elevating the mirror or hiding little imperfections. 
• Once the trim was on and added, I added some decorative wood appliques to the corners and the top to give it an even more elevated look. I used some Rub n Buff to add a little more depth. I fee like the mirror helps make this vanity flip stand out even more! 

• I used wallpaper to line the drawers. I chose THE CUTEST vintage-looking bunny toile print because I feel like it goes well with the vibe of the dresser. And my girls are kind of obssessed with bunnies and all things animals right now since we’re moving to the ranch!

• Finally, I grouted the tile once the 24-hour curing time had passed, and we had the perfect vanity for the girls’ room.
