How To Use The ColorReader EZ

I love that paint can completely change a space. You can go light and airy or darker and moody; all you need is a coat or two of paint! Of all the updates we do in our home, I think paint is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to update a space. My ColorReader EZ definitely makes it so easy.

I love technology that can help make my projects more manageable. I pulled out the ColorReader EZ for this project and was reminded why I love it so much! If you’re planning on painting more than one or two rooms, I think this is a wonderful tool to have on hand. Let me tell you more about it and share some of my favorite tips for picking the perfect paint color.

How to Pick the Perfect Paint Color

  • The ColorReader EZ couldn’t be easier! All you have to do is follow the easy to use instructions from the package to connect the reader to your phone, and you’re ready to go!
  • Simply place the reader on the wallpaper (or whatever object) you are matching, and press the trigger button. This tells the reader to look at the color beneath it and send the information to your phone.
  • In the app, you’ll see a variety of paint colors that match the color the reader picked up. It’s as easy as that! You can choose the finish that works best for your room.

Tips For Picking the Perfect Paint Color

  • Using a handy piece of technology is always a great idea. I love my ColorReader EZ, especially because we are painting nearly every room in this house! It has taken the guesswork out of choosing the perfect color.
  • Even though the ColorReader EZ is usually spot on, I suggest grabbing a couple of samples and trying them in your room. Be sure you check it at different times of day and in different lighting because it can totally change the way the color looks.

How does Color Reader EZ work?

Just open up the ColorReader EZ app and gently rest your device, with the flat side down, on any smooth surface that has the color you want to match. Then, give a tap to the ‘Read’ button on the app on your phone or directly press the button on the device itself. And just like that, you’ll instantly see the top 3 paint color matches pop up!

Does the ColorReader EZ scan/read other things besides wallpaper?

Yes, it does! In addition to wallpaper, I have scanned wall art, furniture, bedding, buildings, clothing, cars, rugs, shoes, etc. It won’t scan a screen, but if you see a physical object in a color that you like and want to know what paint colors might be similar, try scanning it! Besides using my ColorReaderEZ to pick paint colors for soon-to-be-painted walls, I have also used it to color match existing older paint for paint touchups.

Can I use the ColorReader EZ for other things?

I think you probably could. I have never done it, but the ColorReader EZ also gives you the hexcodes for the colors, so I could see this definitely being useful for other projects like graphic design.

How do you choose what color looks good in your room?

There are a lot of ways to approach this. I love taking inspiration from around the room. For my daughters’ room, I used the wallpaper, but you could use a bedspread or fun wall art. Whatever you want to match with. You could go another direction and look at what is currently popular. Neutrals are going to match a wide variety of rooms. Beige or greys are a great place to start. I’m also a big fan of color, so don’t be afraid to go bold! When choosing colors outside of neutrals I tend to stick with colors that are muted or a bit moody. Bright colors are fun, but they do tend to be a bit loud and it’s easy to tire of them quicker. Whatever you land on, make sure it matches your personal style so you can love the color for years to come. And if you change your mind down the road, it’s just paint so it’s a relatively quick and inexpensive fix.

I hope you learned a bit more about how I like to pick a color for my rooms! I love it when a color matches so well that it looks like they were made for each other. It just brings a room together and helps so much with cohesion. If you also decide to use my method (or any method!) for picking a paint color for your room, I’d love to see it.
