Instructions To Install a Backsplash with MusselBound Tile Mat
- When you install a backsplash, ensure the surface where you’ll be tiling is clean, dry, and free of any debris. Wipe down the area to remove dust and grease, and allow it to dry completely before proceeding.
- Measure the area where you’ll be installing the tile backsplash and cut the MusselBound Adhesive Tile Mat to size using scissors or a utility knife.
- Remove the backing from the MusselBound Adhesive Tile Mat to expose the adhesive side. Carefully position the mat onto the wall, starting from one corner and working your way across. Apply firm pressure to the Musselbound to ensure good adhesion.
- Once the adhesive mat is in place, it’s time to apply the tiles. Remove the protective paper from the front of the Musselbound. Work in sections only removing the protective paper as you get to each area; you don’t want dust and debris to adhere to the Musselbound. Press each tile firmly onto the mat, starting from the bottom and working your way up. Make sure the tile is level and exactly where you want it before applying pressure. Musselbound is VERY sticky. While you can remove a crooked tile if necessary, it does take quite a bit of force and you might ruin the Musselbound in that spot. If that happens, you can remove the damaged Musselbound and apply a new piece to that spot. Use tile spacers if necessary to ensure even spacing between tiles.
- Use a tile cutter or wet saw to cut tiles to size as needed, especially for tiles at the edges and corners of the backsplash. Measure carefully and use a pencil to mark the cutting lines before making the cuts. If you use a wet saw to cut the tiles, the tiles must be completely dry before attaching them to the wall.
- One nice thing about using Musselbound is that you can grout your tiles right away! No need to wait on any adhesive to set. Mix the grout according to the manufacturer’s instructions (or use premixed grout), and use a grout float to apply it to the spaces between the tiles.
