Supplies Needed To Update Your Vanity Hardware

  • New Knobs – you can source these all over. I have gotten them online from Amazon, Home Depot, or Lowe’s, and even at Hobby Lobby!
  • Hexagon knobs in these photos
  • Rectangular pulls in these photos
  • A screwdriver or drill – be sure you have the right screwdriver for your knobs. This electric screwdriver is pretty handy!

How to Update Your Vanity Hardware.

  • This really couldn’t be any easier! To start, unscrew your current knobs from your vanity. You might have to get in at a funny angle, but you should be able to start unscrewing with your screwdriver and finish just with your fingers.
  • Take the screw from your new knobs and put it into the hole from the old knob.
  • Screw on your new knob with your finger until it’s finger tight, then tighten it with a screwdriver.

You’re all done! It is so simple but can make all the difference in your space.

Tips For Updating Your Vanity Hardware

  • It is difficult to do, but you can strip the screws on your hardware. This will make it challenging to keep your knobs tight. When you’re putting on your new hardware, just be sure your knob is lined up correctly when you start screwing it on. If you are finding it hard to screw, stop and unscrew it. Then try again. It should be easy to do.
  • When you have your knobs out, take a second to dust. I know, dusting! But you’re probably not going to have the knob out again and it’s way easier without the knob in the way.

What if the screws from my new knobs are bigger than my old knobs?

This can be a little tricky, but you can definitely make an easy fix to make this work! If the width of the new screws is larger, grab your drill and a drill bit the same diameter as your new knob’s screw. Use a drill bit to drill a little on your drawer or door to increase the size of the hole ; your screw should fit easily!

If the screws that came with your new knobs are too long, you can use a grinder or another metal cutting tool to cut off some of the screw length to fit. Knobs often come with a couple different screw lengths, so this isn’t always an issue. But the cuts are easy to make if you have the right tool. Or you can also purchase the same screws in a shorter length at your local hardware store.

How do I choose what metal to use for my new knobs?

Easy! Look around your room (or house if you want that much cohesion) and see what metals you use. If your room has a gold fixture and black hardware, you probably want to choose gold or black over chrome. When you look at the bigger picture, it’s easier to make the choice on your new knobs.

Can I mix and match colors or styles?

Absolutely! I’m a big fan of mixing metals. There are no hard and fast rules, but if you plan to mix metals, you typically want each metal used at least twice in the space. Plus, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just because one person might not like it in their bathroom doesn’t mean you wouldn’t love it. The best part about knobs is that they tend to be inexpensive and are super easy to change, so if you don’t love it when you’re done, that’s fine! Just switch them until you find something you love.

Where do I get new Vanity knobs?

There are a lot of different places where you can source your knobs. I’ve gotten packages of knobs at Home Depot or Lowe’s. You can buy them online through retailers like Walmart or Amazon. I also love the wide variety of unique styles they have at Hobby Lobby. There are so many places to purchase them that you will find something you love.

And that’s it! It is so simple and easy to do, yet so high impact. You can change the look of your entire room by changing the knobs. The best part is that it takes 5 minutes, so you aren’t doing a big long project that never gets done. I would love to see all your before and afters!
